AMHERST, MASSACHUSETTS First resettled by Europeans in 1703, Amherst is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts that has a population of approximately 35,000 people. Located in the Connecticut River Valley and in the heart of the Pioneer Valley, Amherst is known for its exquisite beauty and location in western New England.Amherst is home to Amherst College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, making it one of America's premier "college towns."
