"Gravity" is the twelfth track off of Northern California singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles' 2007 album
Little Voice. The song was one of the six tracks from her 2004 debut album, Careful Confessions,
to be chosen for inclusion on her first major label album (Little Voice, and also one of only five
songs of that follow-up album to be selected to be re-recorded for the live, acoustic re-release of
Little Voice in 2008. Originally intended to be the third American single off the album, the song
received a major spike in popularity outside of the album's fanbase when its accompanying music video was
released on-line in 2009. It was also featured on the soundtrack to the film Loving Annabelle.
For most of the first half of 2009, it was consistently featured in the top ten single sales on Amazon.com
in their Alternative Rock/Singer-Songwriters category.
"Gravity" tells the story of a person who is trying to escape the memory of their lover, only to constantly
fall back into it. In the chorus, the singer asks her lover, either figuratively or literally,
Set me free, leave me be
I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity
Here I am and I stand so tall, just the way I'm supposed to be
But you're on to me and all over me
The song's recording is very sparse and primarily features only Bareilles' piano and her soaring vocals,
which are generally considered to be showcased more on this song than any of her others. In addition, her
live performances of "Gravity" are considered to be her most raw and emotional, affecting her audiences
more than any of her others.
